Music

Authors

Music has an everlasting significance in our lives. Right from the lullabies sang to a crying baby till the mournful songs reserved after the last breath of one's life, the presence of music is everywhere.

As early humans began to learn how to communicate, music became one of the first media to express their feelings. The battle cries of tribes, the celebration of a great hunting spree has made deep contributions. As people turned to farming, leaving them enough free time to be creative, they started exploring several styles of music.

Music isn't a man made invention though. Nature has always been in the forefront of music development. The waterfall as it gushes and plunges down humongous mountains, raindrops trickling down on bamboo bushes, birds chirping merrily at the earliest hours of the day, is nothing but music at its best. We can't deny the fact that nature has been and always be our greatest music teacher. Nature plays a very important role in the compositions of Indian Classical Music.

My social conditioning has been in a very musical atmosphere. I studied at a school which taught us music from varied and diverse origins. From Rabindra-sangeet (musical compositions by Tagore) to Indian folk songs of Hindi, Bengali, Goan origin. The list would be endless if I try to provide the links to all. I enjoyed particularly the songs of various foreign languages. Like the Mexican songs. Besame Mucho an Quien Sera , the Russian Kalinka and a Chinese song. In English we learnt everything from 'Do Re Mi' from the movie 'Sound of Music' to 'Imagine' by the Beatles

Since 2007 I have been learning Esraj (All about Esraj) . I am fairly good at it. I hold junior diploma certificates from Prayag Sangeet Samiti . I haven't pursued it as my career but I do consider it as a nice hobby. Recently I have began making covers of some contemporary English songs and the ones I had learnt in school. As I stay away from home I can't afford to actively play it. This is a link to a recent video of me playing it.

In hostel, I tune into YouTube and various online music streaming sites to listen everything under the sun. Arabic, French, Korean doesn't matter. Music transcends all barriers of language, race, nationality and such narrow confines. Music is for everyone as it connects to our hearts easily. The angst filled hard rock songs, the calm pleasing classical pieces, the upbeat pop music, nostalgic retro tunes all have something to express and resonates our feeling at different phases of our life.

Edit:

Recently I made an amateur video dedicated to late Chester Bennington of the Linkin Park band. Hope you enjoy it.
